چکیده
Neutral and stably-stratified Ekman boundary layers (EBLs) are numerically investigated with a stochastic one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. EBLs achieve the bulk-surface coupling in Earth's atmosphere. They challenging due to transient non-universal properties even at small scales. ODT addresses this problem by distinguishing turbulent-advective from molecular-diffusive transport processes for vertical column along which all relevant scales of flow resolved. We demonstrate model's capabilities economical, accurate, stratification regime independent simulation wind-turning angle. reproduces extrapolates reference direct numerical results consistent observations. conclude that may be useful modeling atmospheric surface layers.

Nonlinear stability of Ekman boundary layers
Consider the initial value problem for the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with rotation in the half-space R+ subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions as well as the Ekman spiral which is a stationary solution to the above equations. It is proved that the Ekman spiral is nonlinearly stable with respect to L2-perturbations provided the corresponding Reynolds number is small enough. Mor...
متن کاملStochastic boundary conditions for coastal flow modeling
[1] Recent high-resolution radar data of surface velocity between the Florida Current and the coast allow us for the first time to deduce coastal boundary conditions for ocean models based on observations. A stochastic model is found to be a better choice for simulating properties of the observed vorticity than a model with deterministic boundary conditions. A stochastic model parameterizing bo...
متن کاملThe influence of an obstacle on flow and pollutant dispersion in neutral and stable boundary layers
The combined effect of shear and buoyancy on dispersion behind a fence is examined. Stable turbulent boundary layers up to Rigrad 1⁄4 0.2 are generated by a recycle method. The fence affects concentrations up to at least 100 obstacle heights downstream. The decay of maximum velocity and temperature deficit is independent of stability. The decay in maximum concentration excess decreases appreciably
متن کاملBoundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk
The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...
متن کاملTransient Evolution of Langmuir Turbulence in Ocean Boundary Layers Driven by Hurricane Winds and Waves
A large-eddy simulation (LES) model, which adopts wave-averaged equations with vortex force, is used to investigate Langmuir turbulence and ocean boundary layer (OBL) dynamics in high-wind hurricane conditions. The temporally evolving spatially asymmetric wind and wave Stokes drift velocity imposed in the LES are generated by a spectral wave prediction model adapted to Hurricane Frances traveli...
